Orlando Pirates’ Gautrain: Tracking Tlou Segolela Journey!
Tlou Segolela, a name that resonates differently across the footballing landscape. Some refer to him as “Rea Vaya,” others as “Gautrain,” but in the heart of Limpopo, his roots, he’s simply known as Tlou Segolela. These diverse monikers stem from his remarkable speed and prowess on the football pitch.
Segolela’s journey to becoming a household name in South African football began in 2007 when he made his transition from the Orlando Pirates development team to the senior squad. It was with the Buccaneers that he etched his name into the annals of football history. In back-to-back seasons, 2010/11 and 2011/12, he was part of the squad that achieved an astonishing double treble. Securing two Premier Soccer League trophies among other titles.
Affectionately known as “Sox,” Segolela left an indelible mark in 2011 when he bagged the PSL Goal of the Season Award for a sensational strike against Free State Stars. This goal, reminiscent of the one scored by Argentine legend Diego Maradona in the 1986 FIFA World Cup Final in Mexico, showcased his extraordinary talent.
In 2009, a brief loan spell saw Segolela at Bloemfontein Celtic, a club that would later undergo transformation into Royal AM under the ownership of multimillionaire Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize in 2021. His return to Pirates in 2010 marked a significant chapter in his career. But he would eventually depart for Platinum Stars in 2015.
After a single season with Dikwena, Segolela embarked on a stint at Polokwane City before joining National First Division (NFD) side Platinum City Rovers. Formerly known as Polokwane City Rovers, where he remained between 2017 and 2020.
Fast forward to 2021, and the former Orlando Pirates star clarified his role at Platinum City Rovers. Initial reports suggested that he had assumed the position of head coach. But in an interview with Phakaaathi, Segolela clarified that he was serving as the general manager. Overseeing day-to-day operations while closely collaborating with head coach Tesco Macheke.
Beyond his contributions to the footballing world, Segolela wears the hat of chairman for Tlou Segolela Sports Development (TSSD). An organization dedicated to enhancing sports in underprivileged communities. The noble work of this non-profit organization is documented on the TSSD TV YouTube channel. Showcasing initiatives such as the Tlou Segolela Annual Festival Tournament (TSAFT), held in Moletjie Mabokele, Limpopo. In the latest installment, winners walked away with a generous prize of R200,000.
Additionally, TSSD engages in philanthropic activities, including the distribution of food parcels and sanitary pads to households in Moletjie. Making a positive impact in communities beyond the football pitch.
